POPULATION GENETICS

Course ID: BBL-SE>POPGEN
Course title: POPULATION GENETICS
Semester: 5 / Winter
ECTS: 3
Lectures/Classes: 15 / 25 hours
Field of study: Biology
Study cycle: 1st cycle
Type of course: compulsory
Prerequisites: Biology, Genetics
Contact person: dr inż. Magdalena Zatoń-Dobrowolska magdalena.dobrowolska@upwr.edu.pl
Short description: The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the issues of population genetics. During the course they are discussed problems of balance and genetic factors changing the genetic structure of the population. Students learn how to estimate frequencies of alleles and genotypes, how to identify future changes in the frequency with respect to the actions of individual factors. They learn the method of comparing the population.
Full description: The course includes following questions: genetic equilibrium of a population; frequencies of alleles and genotypes for one gene and many genes; factors affecting frequencies of genes and genotypes in a population; theory of small populations; value and variability of quantitative trait; source of the phenotypic variances; genetic parameters characterizing a population; estimation of the genetic value; genetic trend in a population and genetic distances between populations.

Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Has knowledge of the factors and mechanisms affecting the genetic structure of populations and describe indicators of populations at a genetic level Determinde the kinds of changes occurring in the population, their causes and consequences Understand the mechanisms affecting the genetic structure of populations and know how can influenced it by various factors Skills: Analyze and interpret the factors and mechanisms that determine the genetic structure of populations Estimate and analyze population structure in terms of one gene and many genes Knows how to specify the types and directions of change in the population and can interpret their causes and analyze the consequences that they bring to the population Social competences: Is aware of the responsibility for shaping the population and its evolutions Understand the need to predict consequences of actions taken in nature
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: The grade obtained at classes of 50% and the grade obtained from the lectures 50%.
